Yesterday, a law enforcement official showed a group, of which I was part, items that had been confiscated from inmates. There were weapons, devices crudely manufactured to smoke dope, and even instruments to apply jail house tattoos. I was impressed with the innovativeness that had been required to alter a common object in order to make it useful for something it wasn’t originally intended. I could not help but wonder what those inmates might be able to do if they would put that innovativeness to use for something positive. I suspect we could all use our smarts for more noble purposes than we sometimes do.
