This Sunday will be what the religious calendar calls, “Palm Sunday.” It is so called because the people lined the streets waving palm branches and laying them in the pathway, as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a little donkey. This was akin to “rolling out the red carpet.” They would do this when a victorious king return from a great battle, and on this day the people were celebrating Jesus as being a great king. The only thing, Jesus never came to be an earthly king, and in just a couple of days, some of these same people would be shouting, “Crucify Him, crucify Him.” We are saddened to think that folks could turn their backs on Him the way they did. It was no surprise to Him, but it did bring Him grief. He didn’t come to be an earthly king, but He came to go to the Cross and pay our sin debt, which He did. How grieved He must be when we act like it’s not all that important.
