The best of products deteriorate or simply wear out. For some, this happens rather quickly, while others go through a diminishing process over a relatively long period of time. There are few things that really keep on enduring, but love is one of them. Long after the Energizer Bunny has stopped his drum, when the sun no longer shines, and the universe has been rolled up like a scroll, love will continue. I’m not making it up! It’s the word of God.
1 Corinthians 13:8 says, “Love never fails.” Then, the rest of the chapter gives some explanation and makes some comparisons to some very enduring things, but concludes that when those things are gone by the wayside, love will still be there. The last verse in the chapter tells us that love is greater than faith, and it’s greater than hope.
Faith and hope are two of the most necessary qualities of life. Without faith, one could not be saved. It is when our hand of faith is placed in God’s hand of grace that the supernatural, eternal changing event of being born again takes place in our life. Without faith, we could not do anything that would be pleasing to God, according to Hebrews 11:6. We would exist in the displeasure of the One in whom we move and have our being. Such a condition would surely come to no good end. So, words cannot express the importance of faith.
Hope keeps us going, keeps our spirits lifted, helps us over the rough spots in life. Hope is looking forward to the fulfillment of God’s promises through the eyes of faith. For the person of faith and hope, there is always a better day on the horizon. God’s word tells us to “look up, lift our heads, because our redemption is drawing near.” Hope is that thing down inside us that gives us the will to live. People who believe they have no hope are miserable and cannot even bear their own life. Hope is extremely important, and like faith, it is one of God’s grace gifts to us.
As important as faith and hope are, this text says that love is greater. It is greater because it is even more foundational. We believe God’s great and precious promises, and we take our stand upon them, because we love God, therefore we trust Him. Love is also greater because of its endurance, as this text declares. All faith will one day become sight, and all hope will be fully realized, but love will just keep on going. For all eternity, we will keep on loving with this godly love.
