The Power Of Understanding

Most Christians quickly agree that the Bible is God’s word, and that it is our means of understanding the will of God in all areas of life.

People are at one of three places in their relationship to God’s word: Ignorance, knowledge, or obedience. Many people are simply ignorant to what the Bible says concerning specific matters. They have neither personally studied the Bible, nor have they submitted themselves to any real teaching of the Bible, therefore, they do not know. Then, there are many who have been exposed to biblical teaching, perhaps for many years, and may even be able to quote certain verses from memory, yet this knowledge has not really translated into obedience in their life. There is a huge gap between knowing and obedience. To get from knowledge to obedience one needs the motivation of the Holy Spirit, but this motivation doesn’t come with the suddenness of a bolt of lightening, rather it comes by an understanding of God’s word. By understanding God’s word, one comes to understand who God is in him, and who he is in God. This understanding brings one to the place that he can bring God’s word to bear on the situations of his life. When this happens, anything is possible.

For those who desire healthier relationships, financial freedom, or even personal health, God’s word speaks to all of these things.

Because of a lack of understanding, many people are praying for God to help them in certain areas of their life, and all the while, they are continuing to disobey God’s instructions for success in those very areas. Jesus said, “If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” He also said that He came “that we might have life, and that more abundantly.” Where are you in your relationship to the Word of God? Your answer will tell you where you are in your relationship to the God of the Word.
