Scriptural Commands

There are four things that are true concerning every command of Scripture:

#1 – You can do it.

If you are born again, you have the Divine Enabler, The Holy Spirit, living inside you.  Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God who works in you, both to will and do of His good pleasure.”

#2 – You must decide to do it.

If it were going to happen automatically, because of your being a Christian, God would not have put it in the Bible as a command.  Thankfully, the Holy Spirit in us motivates us, but it remains that we must decide.

#3 – You might not do it.

It seems like that doesn’t need to be said, but the truth is, many Christians are living in disobedience to many of the biblical commands.  Some do so in ignorance.  In Hosea 4:4, God says, “My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge.”  So, what you don’t know can really hurt you.  Then, there are others who disobey because of a rebellious heart.  First Samuel 15:23 says, “…rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft...”  There is nothing good said in the Bible about witchcraft!

#4 – There are results if you do it, or if you don’t.

Many places in the Bible speaks of God’s blessing for obedience, and His chastening for disobedience.  Do you believe the best life possible is a life lived in obedience to God?  Or, are you like the masses of people, who by their actions show that they don’t really believe that?  At the root of every transgression, is the deep down belief that God’s way is not the best way.   Second Corinthians 9:8 tells us that God is able to make all grace abound toward us, but by the same token, He is able make grace bypass us.  Thankfully, His grace is greater than our sin, but we would do well to take very seriously His commands, because He surely does.
